Understanding Homoeopathy
What is homoeopathy?
Homoeopathy is a system of natural medicine which has been in use worldwide for over 200 years. It is recognised by the World Health Organisation as the second largest therapeutic system in use in the world.
It is based on the principle of 'like cures like'. This means that a substance which can cause certain symptoms in a healthy person can, in minute doses, be used to remediate similar symptoms in a person who is unwell.
Homoeopathy is a holistic therapy which looks at the whole person, not just the physical symptoms. It takes into account the emotional and physical traits of the individual when choosing a remedy.
The Remedies
Homoeopathic remedies are prepared from natural sources, including plants and minerals. They are prepared by a process of serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking), which is known as potentisation.
This process renders the remedies non-toxic and safe for all ages, including infants, pregnant women, and the elderly. Because of their unique preparation, they do not interfere with conventional medications.
Side Effects?
One of the great advantages of homoeopathy is that it is gentle and free from toxic side effects. It works by stimulating the body's own natural defense system to bring about healing.
Occasionally, there may be a brief 'aggravation' or slight worsening of symptoms followed by improvement, which is usually a positive sign that the body's healing response has been activated.
